THE LIVING LEGEND OF TRANSYLVANIA

Welcome to the fortress of Hunedoara, which became the castle of the most brilliant king of medieval Hungary, Matthias Corvinus.

The monument has a special charm due to its various construction styles, the presence of military and civilian innovations, as well as the tumultuous courtyard life that has animated it for over 400 years.

Corvin Castle impresses with its presence, which dominates the city of Hunedoara. For those attracted by the Middle Ages, the castle is a unique monument in Romania and among the most attractive in Europe.

The history of the castle

The first stone fortification from Hunedoara was dated by most researchers in the 14th century (Gheorghe Anghel), although there are specialists who attribute the royal camp to the first half of the 15th century (Elemér Mályusz, Adrian Andrei Rusu, Radu Lupescu). This first fortification had an ellipsoidal shape, with sharp northern and southern ends, marked by the waist stone.

The walls, up to 2 m thick, were built of blocks of dolomitic limestone and river stone, directly on the native rock. Research prior to the First World War showed that in the northern area there were two triangular-shaped rooms, one of which was probably a keep tower, with analogies in the French and German area of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
